If you've ever wanted to experience the magic of fairy bread at home, this recipe is for you! Buttery, sweet and delicious - this recipe is a must try!

Fairy bread is the perfect sweet treat for kids. The best thing about this snack is, it takes no time at all to make, and it is very tasty.

    What is Fairy Bread?

Fairy bread is a tried and true Australian treat, often enjoyed for breakfast or as an after-school snack. It's essentially buttered bread with sprinkles, or bread with syrup and nonpareils.

The exact origin of fairy bread is unclear, but some people believe it comes from the poem "Fairy Bread" by Robert Louis Stevenson. It could be simply because fairies are fun, just like the treat!

In fact, it is so popular in Australia & New Zealand, they have a National Fairy Bread Day every November 24th!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    1. Kid-friendly and easy to make. Even little kiddos can make this 3 ingredient dessert.
    2. Customizable: You can easily create your own special version of this treat.
    3. Fun way to celebrate birthday parties or any special occasion. Serve some fairy bread for a sweet birthday breakfast, or when your kids lose a tooth!

Some of my other favorite treats are Chocolate Chip Blondies and Mini Carrot Cake Muffins! They’re not quite as quick to make as this fun recipe, but they’re just as good!

    Ingredients

See ingredient substitutions in the next section. ⬇️

    • Bread: The classic choice for this kid-friendly treat is any soft white sandwich bread.
    • Caramel syrup: The syrup is an edible glue, giving the sprinkles something to stick to.
    • Nonpareils: In Australian, these are known as 100s or 1000s. They're tiny sphere sprinkles.
Three slices of white sandwich bread next to a bottle of caramel syrup and a plate filled with multicolored sprinkles.

    Substitutions

    • Bread: To keep it traditional, use a slice of soft white bread. Otherwise, get creative and use any type you love.
    • Syrup: Instead of caramel syrup, you can use caramel sauce, pure maple syrup, Nutella, chocolate sauce, or jam. You can even make it with a slice of buttered bread if you want.
    • Nonpareils: If you can't find these little sphere-shaped sprinkles, feel free to use any type of sprinkle topping that you enjoy. If you don't want the multicolor look, use something like chocolate sprinkles instead.

    Liz's Recipe Variations and Notes

    1. Make it with toast. Toast the bread first, let it cool, then follow the steps as normal.
    2. Change up the sauce. This recipe is very versatile. If you do a quick search for “fairy bread Australia” you will find quite a few variations. I use caramel sauce, but other tasty options are Nutella, chocolate sauce, butter and jam. Whatever floats your fairy boat!
    3. Cut out fun shapes. If you want to make your treat even cuter, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in the bread before or after you dress it up.
    4. Use various kinds of sprinkles. 100’s and 1000’s are what Australians call the sprinkles most commonly used in fairy bread recipes. In the U.S., they’re called nonpareils. However, you can use chocolate jimmies, sprinkles, or anything else your heart desires.
    5. Use different kinds of bread - You can use any bread your heart desires. Traditionally, soft white bread is the base, but you can use any type you want - brioche, sourdough, or even apple bread.

    Storage

The flavor and texture are best when it's eaten as soon as possible after making it. However, you can put it in an airtight container or food storage bag and keep it in the fridge for a few hours. Do not freeze it.

Why is fairy bread only in Australia?

This is a treat for anyone who loves to smile! It originated in Australia, and is commonly served there. Of course, anyone in the world can make and enjoy this happy, delicious treat!

What does fairy bread taste like?

The flavor is very sugary and sweet. It's meant for special occasions like birthdays.
