    Valentine's Day Oreo Balls

If you want to make something special as a sweet treat for Valentine's Day but you don't have a lot of time, candy and truffle recipes are a great solution! Like this Oreo balls recipe.

These little truffles are delicious, come together quickly, and no baking is required! It doesn't get much easier than this.

    Ingredients

See ingredient substitutions in the next section. ⬇️

There are just 4 ingredients in this recipe, and honestly, you can find all of them at places like Walmart or your local grocery store.

    • Oreo cookies: I suggest using the classic Oreos, not the Double Stuf or Oreo Thins. You need to have some filling to hold the balls together, but not too much or the mixture will be pretty sticky.
    • cream cheese: I used a block of cream cheese, but the spreadable kind sold in a plastic container also works.
    • white candy melts: For the coating on the Oreo balls, candy melts work better than chocolate chips. They can handle the heat better than chips can.
    • heart candies or sprinkles: I think these little pink and red heart candies are really cute, and they're easy to apply!

    Substitutions and Recipe Variations

    • sandwich cookies: You don't have to use Oreos - any type of sandwich cookie will work fine. You can even use something other than a cookies and cream flavor. Nutter Butters and lemon sandwich cookies are tasty options.
    • cream cheese: Low fat cream cheese will work, but avoid using fat-free; It has too much water in it, which can make it difficult to form the Oreo balls.
    • white candy melts: Like I just mentioned, candy melts handle the heat better than chips, but if you can't find candy melts, a tablespoon of vegetable shortening melted with a 12-ounce bag of white chocolate chips should work.
    • decorations: Feel free to use any type of sprinkles, jimmies, or tiny candies. You can even use cookie crumbs if you want to.

You may have noticed that unlike cake pops, this Oreo balls recipe does not include any powdered sugar. After you mix the cream cheese and cookies together, taste some of the mixture. If you feel like it needs to be a little bit sweeter, you can mix in a couple of tablespoons of powdered sugar.

    Liz's Tips and Recipe Notes

    1. Let the melted coating cool for a minute before you start dipping the balls. Otherwise, it may start to melt the cream cheese mixture.
    2. To make dipping easier, hold the truffle balls on the tines of a fork, or use a toothpick
    3. Using candy melts for coating the Oreo balls is the best option because they melt well and don't seize up as easily as chocolate chips. They also come in colors like pink and red, which you could also use for the Valentine's Day treats.
    4. The candy coating firms up and harden very quickly. So, have the candy decorations nearby, and place them on as quickly as possible.

    Storing Instructions

Because cream cheese is a dairy product, the Oreo balls need to be kept in the refrigerator. Do not leave them at room temperature for more than 2 hours, and enjoy them within 4 days after making them.

    Oreo Balls Recipe FAQs

Can I use other types of Oreos?

Absolutely! I don't recommend using Oreo Thins, but feel free to use any other flavors, like Birthday Cake or Golden Oreos.

How can I make them easier to eat?

The truffles aren't very messy, but to make them easier for little hands to hold, feel free to place each Oreo ball onto a lollipop stick.

    Ingredients

    • 36 Oreos
    • 4 ounces cream cheese softened to room temp
    • 1 cup white candy melts
    • ¼ cup heart candies

    Instructions

    • Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper, and set it aside.
    • In the bowl of a food processor, pulse the Oreos until they turn into crumbs.
    • Add the cream cheese to the food processor bowl and pulse until a firm dough comes together.
    • Using a medium-sized cookie scoop, portion the dough, then gently roll it between the palms of your hands to form round balls.
    • Arrange the Oreo balls on the sheet pan and transfer it to the freezer for 10 minutes to firm up.
    • While the Oreo balls are chilling, microwave the candy melts in 30-second intervals until they melt, stirring in between each interval.
Important: Be sure the mixture isn't too hot when you start dipping the Oreo truffles or they will break down into the candy coating.
    • Pierce a fork or toothpick into a cold Oreo ball and dip it into the candy melt, gently turning it to coat the entire ball. Transfer it back onto the parchment paper and place a candy heart on top.
Note: The coating hardens quickly, so be sure to place the candy hearts on immediately after dipping.
    • Repeat until all the Oreo balls are coated and decorated.
    • Keep the truffles in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve them, for up to 4 days.
