These are some of the best apples to use when baking:

    • Granny Smith - Tart! These will pair really well with the sweetness of this dessert.
    • Honeycrisp - While pricey, they offer a sweet and tart flavor. Almost like a caramel apple without the caramel.
    • Golden Delicious- Not to be confused with red delicious apples. Golden delicious apples are well, delicious!
    • Rome - A super red apple and not too tart. A great all-around apple. Good for pies, crisps, and apple sauce.

    Storing Apple Cobbler:

Storing: After the apple cobbler has cooled you can store it covered tightly in plastic wrap for up to 4-6 days in the refrigerator.

Freezing: You can also freeze apple cobbler for up to 3 months wrapped tightly in foil or plastic wrap and in an airtight container. Thaw completely before enjoying.

*Note that freezing an apple cobbler can result in a softer texture of the apple and crumble after thawing.

Substitutions for this Easy Apple Cobbler:

Salted Butter: Butter is essential to this recipe. We haven't tried it with dairy-free butter but it might work!

Sugar: We don't recommend substituting white sugar unless you have to, but White sugar can be used interchangeably with brown sugar. You can add 1 teaspoon of molasses to white sugar to make brown sugar. Check out this post on Sugar Substitutes for Baking for other ideas.

All Purpose Flour: We don't recommend substituting the flour, but you can check out this article on Cake Flour vs. All-Purpose Flour or Substitutions for All-Purpose Flour

Baking Powder: Baking powder is essential for this recipe. Do NOT substitute with baking soda.

Sliced Apples: We don't recommend substituting apples in this apple cobbler recipe.

Ground Cinnamon: Flavor! Apple Pie Spice would work for this apple cobbler if you don't have cinnamon on hand.

Cornstarch: We don't recommend substituting cornstarch, as that is going to thicken up the apple cobbler filling.

    Serving Suggestions for Apple Cobblers

Ice Cream - Place a large scoop of french vanilla ice cream on top of the still warmed Apple Cobbler.

Caramel sauce - Drizzle your favorite caramel sauce on top for some extra sweetness!

Holiday Spice - While we all love cinnamon, using an apple pie spice may bring those warm fall flavors and scents inside your home.

Tips for Apple Cobbler with Fresh Apples

    • Peeling the apples: While a tedious task, peeling the apples will leave the apple cobbler with a nice mouth feel. Apple peels can fall off the apples during baking a create an unusual texture.
    • Lemon Zest: If you want a bit of tartness to your apples, grate some lemon zest onto the apples before baking.
    • Apples & Peaches!: Switch it up and replace an apple or two with peaches. Firmer peaches would work best.

    Apple Cobbler vs Apple Crisp

Apple cobbler is named for the way the topping looks on top. Like a cobblestone road. Typically made as dough or batter and placed on top of the apples before baking.

Apple crisp has a topping made with oats and is crumbly in appearance.

    Apple Cobbler FAQ:

    Why is my cobbler dry?

It is likely that your cobbler is dry because not enough butter was used, or there was not enough moisture in the apples that were used.
Double-check the measurements before preparing to ensure a moist apple cobbler.

Do cobblers have a bottom crust?

No, cobblers do not have a bottom crust. A cobbler is baked with a fruit bottom and a dough-like topping on top that is said to resemble a cobblestone road.

    • 3 tablespoons white sugar
    • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
    • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

    For the Topping

    • ½ cup white sugar
    • 1 cup all purpose flour
    • ½ cup salted butter melted (1 stick)
    • ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 2.5-quart baking dish.
    • Peel, core, and slice the apples
    • In a large bowl combine apples, 3 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, and the cornstarch. Stir until coated
    • In a small bowl, make the cobbler topping. Combine sugar, melted butter, flour, cinnamon and baking powder with your hands until a crumbly texture forms.
    • Sprinkle large crumbles over the apple mixture .
    • Bake for 40 minutes. Remove from oven and enjoy!

    Notes

  • Serve with vanilla ice cream - Vanilla ice cream is a classic favorite when it comes to being served with homemade apple cobbler. I usually do one big scoop per serving of apple cobbler. The mixture of the warm apples and the cold ice cream is otherworldly.
  • Make it a crumble topping - You can slightly reduce the butter, cut it into chunks, leave it chilled, and then add it to the rest of the topping ingredients. This will make it more of a crumble than a breading top.
  • Top with icing - Mix one cup powdered sugar and a tablespoon of milk together and drizzle it over the top. This adds a delicate yet delicious icing to your cobbler. You can even add the icing to individual servings instead of the entire thing, if desired.
