Substitutions for Brownies in the Air Fryer
Eggs: We don't recommend substituting eggs, but you can read this article on how to substitute for eggs in brownies. Try it at your own risk! For each egg, you can substitute using a variety of different ingredients:
- ½ a medium banana
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water
- ¼ cup apple sauce
Butter: Coconut Oil, margarine, or lard are good substitutes for butter in this recipe.
Canola Oil: Canola oil can be replaced 1:1 with applesauce. I would not recommend using applesauce here if also using applesauce as an egg replacement.
Vanilla extract: A great substitute for vanilla is pure maple syrup. Other flavor enhancers that would work great in brownies are almond extract, vanilla paste, espresso powder, or pumpkin pie extract.
White sugar: Coconut sugar or even brown sugar will both work as a substitute. If not using sugar a monk fruit sweetener blend tastes just like regular white granulated sugar.
Cocoa Powder: If you don't have cocoa powder, you can use 1 ounce of unsweetened chocolate for every 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
Flour: I haven't tried making these with gluten free flour so I'm not sure how it would work!
Baking Powder: Use ¼ teaspoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of cream of tartar for each teaspoon of baking powder required.
Chocolate Chips: This is where the substitutions can get fun! You can use Butterscotch chips, Reeses peanut butter chips, White chocolate chips, Raspberry flavored chips, Mint Chips or Dark Chocolate Chips.
Air Fry Brownies FAQs
Yes! You can make brownies from a box mix in the air fryer basket.
Prepare the brownie mix according to its package instructions.
Divide the boxed brownie batter into two small-batch brownies. Cook one batch at a time.
If you do not have a 7-inch circular baking pan for this recipe, you have options. Since not all air fryers are not the same size, I would test fit your baking pan or dishes before pouring in the batter. Most air fryers allow for the use of glass, ceramic, silicone, metal dishes, or bakeware. The best practice is to double-check your air fryer's user guide first. My favorite alternative baking dish is 2-3 ceramic ramekins.
Traditional brownies typically have a longer cooking time, forcing you to wait up to 45 minutes for your chocolatey dessert. With an air fryer, you can have your brownies on the table in under a half hour - before your oven is ready to bake.
Brownies are cooked if you stick a cake tester in the center of the pan and it comes out clean. If it comes out gooey or with batter on it, the brownies are not cooked.
Brownies become more fudgy when they have fat added to them! Butter and oil lead to a fudgy brownie.
I haven't tried baking the brownies without a pan, so I can't fully recommend it. However, some people say you can do it by lining the air fryer basket with parchment paper, but I think that could get messy quickly if you aren't careful.

I have a compact air fryer so I had to make a few modifications - temp is only by 10's (used 370) and the cake pan was too tall so I had to use the pizza pan from a previous Cosori I had. I cooked for 14 minutes but that was just 1 minute too long. The top was just starting to burn but the inside was still super "moist" which I was shocked by. I thought I had ruined it. I loved this recipe. It was perfect for my family to share. I had all the ingredients on hand and it was easy and quick. Next time I just need to go for a minute less and there will definitely be a next time
