Tips for Making Valentine’s Easy Toffee
- Reach the right temperature - If you have a candy thermometer, check that your butter and sugar mixture reaches at least 285 degrees. If not, the toffee consistency won’t be correct and it will be gooey rather than hard.
- Be as quick as possible - Once you pour that butter and sugar mixture into the pan, be quick about getting the chocolate chips on top. Once the chocolate is spread, don’t waste time getting your toppings on because the chocolate will begin to cool quickly.
- Variations - You can use other flavors of chocolate chips if you prefer, such as peanut butter, butterscotch, white chocolate, etc. Other fun toppings are various cookies, crumbled pop tarts, crumbled bacon, more toffee pieces, mini chocolate chips, etc. This Red Hot Valentine Bark is another great option for a Valentine's Day treat!
Storing Toffee
Storage: Toffee is best stored in an airtight container. You can store it at room temperature for up to a week or up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
How do you break toffee?
Usually, you can just break toffee by putting pressure with your thumb in various areas and producing randomly shaped pieces.
However, you can also cover the toffee with plastic or foil and lightly tap it with a random kitchen utensil.
You can also wrap it in foil (not too tightly) then drop it into the pan you baked it in and this should break it up nicely.
Why is my Toffee Grainy?
Grainy toffee is probably one of the most frustrating issues to arise in the creation process. However, it’s a pretty easy fix.
The first step in toffee making is to melt the butter and toffee, but you have to make sure the sugar melts before boiling occurs. Boiling can occur quickly, so be sure to use low heat when melting the butter and sugar together and this fixes the issue.
