Substitutions for this Candied Walnuts Recipe:
Whole Walnuts: You can make this recipe with pecans in place of walnuts.
Sugar: We don't recommend substituting white sugar unless you have to, but White sugar can be used interchangeably with brown sugar. You can add 1 teaspoon of molasses to white sugar to make brown sugar. Check out this post on Sugar Substitutes for Baking for other ideas.
All Natural Pure Maple Syrup: Maple syrup adds another level of flavor while keeping the candy coating on the walnuts. Using an agave syrup with maple extract may offer the same flavor profile, but we haven't tried it
Ground Cinnamon: Helps to add flavor, we don't recommend substituting.
Ground Nutmeg: Helps to add flavor, we don't recommend substituting.
Salt: Adds flavor and helps to balance the sweetness, we don't recommend substituting. Add a bit of cayenne pepper for a touch of spice.

FAQ for Easy Candied Walnuts
Sticky candied walnuts are caused by not cooking or baking the sugar long enough. Simply make sure you cook your candies at a high enough temperature to cook the sugar properly. Properly cooked sugar will create that crunchy coating on the outside. I usually bake mine at 325 or higher.
There’s no need to reheat these if pulled from the freezer or fridge. Simply let them warm up on their own for a few minutes before serving.
