These DIY candy roses are cute as a gift, and can easily be turned into a DIY Candy Boquet. They are also fun to make with the kids, or even great for bake sales or birthday party treats.
So, a lot of people don’t know that Tootsie Rolls come in more flavors than just chocolate. Although arguably, the original flavor is the best, they also have fruit flavors as well. The flavors include lime, lemon, orange, cherry, and vanilla. It’s not really known when the fruit flavors were added, but the brand started with the traditional chocolate Tootsie Roll and progressed from there, adding more and more candies to their repertoire.
The Tootsie Roll was first manufactured in 1896 and was named after the founder’s daughter. It was used as an alternative to chocolate, which would melt really easily, especially as the warmer months would set in. It’s customary to give chocolate on holidays, birthdays, etc. However, during the summer months, it’s such a bad idea to try and handle chocolate. That’s why I love coming up with treats like these Rainbow Tootsie Roll Candy Flowers. They’re unique, impress easily, inexpensive, and make for a great gift, snack, fun item for kids, party treat, and more. Combine them together for a great DIY candy bouquet.
How to Make Rainbow Tootsie Roll Candy Flowers
Cut and Roll the Tootsie Rolls - Cut each Tootsie Roll in 3 equal pieces and warm them up in your hand by rolling each piece into a ball or close to it.
Flatten the Tootsie Rolls - One at a time, place each ball in between two pieces of wax paper. Smash it down just a bit, but not too hard, then roll it flat with the rolling pin. It will end up looking like the large version of a flattened penny or a skinny oval.
Roll Around the Sucker Stick - Begin one color at a time and alternate between the colors. Wrap the first piece around the tip of the sucker stick like you might roll up a crescent roll. You’re going for the center of the flower. As you add each piece, bend out the edges of the “petals” so the flower begins to open up.
Check the Positioning and Enjoy - Be sure your flower is even on all sides as you go along making it. Trim the paper straw, hand out, and enjoy!
Tips for Making Rainbow Tootsie Roll Candy Roses
- Experiment - It’s ok if you mess up, it’s pretty easy to peel back each piece and readjust it without making a mess or destroying the flower itself. Experiment to make sure the placement is good and that the outside of the flower looks just as good as the inside.
- Make the flower in different stages - To make the flower look like it’s in various stages of blooming, simply put on less layers. You can make it look like it’s just a flower bud by only adding 6 or so layers of the Tootsie Roll sheets or continue to add more if you want the flower bigger and more elaborate.
- Make it chocolate - Use the original chocolate Tootsie Rolls to switch it up and make a chocolate flower instead.
- Store in a cool dry place - If you want your flowers to be in tip top shape, store them upright, in a cool, dry place. Do not store them in the fridge or freezer as this will make them sticky and awful.
- Make them all one color - If you don’t want them to be rainbow colored, you can use the same color of Tootsie Roll to make each flower if you’re going for one color theme.
Common Questions About Rainbow Tootsie Roll Candy Flowers
Do Tootsie Rolls Expire?
Tootsie Rolls definitely expire as with any food or candy in general. Now, they have quite a long shelf life because, well, they’re made out of a lot of sugar. This allows them to last longer than most foods. They don’t usually mold; when they go bad, they’re usually just much harder, or stale tasting. Tootsie Rolls can last up to two years on average and it’s suggested they not be used beyond this timespan.
