Substitutions & Variations
All-purpose flour - There are many different flours you can substitute for white flour in many recipes. Note that not all of these flours can be substituted 1:1.
Salted butter - When it comes to baking, not all of us have salted butter laying around. If all you have is Unsalted Butter, add ¼ teaspoon of salt per ½ cup or 1 stick of butter.
White sugar - brown sugar or even Coconut Sugar will both work as a substitute. If not using sugar a monk fruit sweetener blend tastes just like regular white granulated sugar.
Brown sugar - Similarly to White Sugar, you can replace Brown Sugar with Coconut Sugar or even white sugar.
Maple syrup, honey, agave, and molasses are other options to replace brown sugar and still maintain that rich sweet flavor.
Egg - For one egg, you can substitute using a variety of different ingredients:
- ¼ cup apple sauce
- ½ a medium banana
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water
Vanilla extract - A great substitute for vanilla is pure maple syrup. Try a coffee or espresso extract to boost that flavor.
Baking soda - If you're needing to substitute Baking Soda, Baking Powder is going to be the next best option. It is NOT a 1:1 substitution ratio, you'll use a 1:3 ratio. For every 1 teaspoon of baking soda, use 3 teaspoons of baking powder.
Other Ways to Serve Chocolate Chip Cereal
Of course, try this recipe as a cereal but don't stop there! Give these a try:
- Ice cream sundae topping
- Mix into your morning yogurt
- Use in combination with your granola mixture
- Add to a marshmallow crispy treat
- Topping for a cookie butter pie
Cookies Cereal Tips
Use different chip flavors - If preferred, you can change the mini chocolate chips to another flavor. Great options are white chocolate, caramel, butterscotch, etc.
Skip the chocolate chips altogether - If you want to try it just as a brown sugar cookie without the chocolate, that works and is a delicious idea as well!
What tip should I use? - I used a 12 frosting tip to place the dollops on the baking sheet. You don’t have to be overly picky with what tip you use.
Don’t overfill the frosting bag - I learned the hard way - don’t overfill the bag with dough. It makes it hard to get the right leverage and makes a mess. Fill it halfway and it’s easier to work with.
Don't want a flat cookie? - If you prefer your cookies to puff up a bit more and not spread out to be thinner on the sides, swap the butter for Crisco. You can use butter-flavored Crisco so you don’t lose the buttery flavor.
